Getting Involved (click photos to enlarge)
Becoming an active member of FOLA can lead to many interesting activities. One memorable
event was hosting a luncheon meeting for the staff of St Johns River Water Management District in April of 2000
to discuss our goals and how we can help with the process of restoration.
One of our activities that has been very beneficial in reaching the public with the story of the decline of
Lake Apopka and the current restoration efforts is our FOLA booth exhibit. We have volunteers that
regularly set up this presentation at shows and festivals in the area and enjoy letting people know how well the
lake is progressing.
Three airboaters enjoy a picnic lunch after a hard morning's work collecting submerged trash from around the shoreline
of Lake Apopka in July of 2008. Working out of Magnolia Park, the Airboat Cleanup was organized by FOLA member and
airboater Mike Brinkley (on left). The volunteers were able to fill a 20 yard dumpster and remove 22 tires
from the lake.
